The new Volvo FL - a ground-breaking towing truck
The versatility of the new Volvo FL 512 is presented to the world in a new collaboration between Volvo Trucks and towing solution company Bro Bärgningsbyggen AB. The creation of a ground-breaking towing truck, called the BB55 City, shows the lightest model in the new range of Volvo trucks to be a tough, adaptable vehicle, ideal for city-based driving assignments.
The new towing truck arrived at the Volvo Demo Center in Gothenburg on a rainy day in early February. Pontus Mörth and Björn Axelsson from Bro Bärgningsbyggen transported the truck to Gothenburg from their factory in Kristinehamn. Tobias Bergman, Product Manager for Volvo FL and FE trucks on Volvo Trucks Commercial, and Christian Forslund, who works with the Nordic market, were on hand to receive the new truck and to watch a demonstration of how two vehicles - in this case two Volvo XC70 cars - can be transported on the back of the specially converted Volvo FL 512.
“We see this variant of the Volvo FL as being of particular interest to the EMEA markets. The benefits of the chassis height and low instep, together with the tremendous visibility make the Volvo FL 512 the perfect city truck. The fact that it is able to serve such a vital function as a towing truck illustrates its flexibility and shows that it has so many more possibilities than simply being a ‘box truck’. Also, it offers excellent possibilities to distribute weight over the full chassis length. It will be hard for our competitors to offer a solution like this, with the same amount of payload on a similar application” says Tobias Bergman.
The importance of weight distribution on the truck is key to its high quality performance as a towing truck. It should ideally be as heavy as possible at the front and as light as possible at the back. Furthermore, the innovative chassis design of the Volvo FL ensures that work can be carried out at an optimum height for the driver.
According to Pontus Mörth, Managing Director and owner of Bro Bärgningsbyggen, there is already considerable interest in the Volvo FL 512 variant. “We have been contacted by several prospective customers. By manufacturing almost everything ourselves onsite, we are able to offer the complete towing solution together with Volvo Trucks. Our customers know that they will receive the highest quality Swedish-built truck, with a modern chassis adapted to their needs. A premium truck deserves a premium superstructure, with Swedish design at its best.”
The seed of the project was planted around a year ago when discussions between the two parties began. Christian Forslund from Market Nordic is convinced that the concept is an excellent and worthwhile one. “The building time on the Volvo FL 512 was much shorter than normal. By sitting down and finding common solutions we have been able to create a better truck. We have set ourselves challenges and been able to overcome problems along the way.”
The final result speaks for itself. A 12 tonne tow truck with almost the same payload capacities as a normal 14 tonne tow truck – with improved ergonomics for the operator.
